Alternator OEM Volvo or AC DELCO
I always get AC Delco from RockAuto... never had one bad out of the box... Can't really speak to any other brands.
Assuming this is a T5 (5cyl) that price is about right for the dealer. I had my alternator replaced under warranty about 2 years ago and the billed price was right about 1350 for just the alt replacement.
I’ve had an ac delco alternator from rock auto in my Honda Fit for 7 years now.
The 2.4 in my 2006 S40 was stone cold reliable to 157k miles before I sold it. Needed a new alternator at about 145k but that was it. It’s been 2 years and I still miss driving that car. The BEST front seats of any vehicle I’ve driven or ridden in.
My old 04 Volvo Xc90 had 311k on the dash before the alternator gave up lol. Doing better than that!
Put an AC Delco alternator on my Celica because I couldn't get a Denso for it. Wasn't going to buy a store brand reman that'll die in 6 months.
If it was me, I’d go with the ACDelco. Never had any issues with them so far. Checking for the best warranty is something else you might consider, just make sure to read that fine print closely.
On rock auto I see new alternators from ac delco. Not sure about any of those brands.
The issue you can run into is most common vehicle alternators are light duty at best. Lets say its a 100 amp alt, don't pull more than 40 amps continuous. A great example is the AC Delco 10si alternator. Loads of cheap knock offs and copies of that alternator all claiming crazy high amperage but none list the duty cycle. The 10si frame is designed for 40 amps of power and the heat that creates. You might be able to get a little more cooling with a better fan but you won't get 100+ amps out of one.
Another good way to tell your alternator is going is the battery light illumination. I noticed as I drove to higher RPM's, used the vents or even used windows with more power gave more illumination of the battery light. Tested the alternator at a shop and found it to be weak, battery was fine.
