I've use the KYBs several times, they have a good street ride.
Best Shock absorbers for Toyota 4runner
I went the 5160/6112 route and love them. Coming from stock suspension for the first 50k it was amazing offroad but really helped with the on-road nosedive and with upgrade springs in the rear helped tremendously with the sag from my rtt trailer.
Fox 2.5" internal bypass shock and springs off a 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.
Adds about 1" in height. Rides a bit firmer that stock shocks on paved roads and performs great off-road.
I put 5100’s on my ‘18 4Runner and it was a massive improvement firming up the horrible body roll from the factory.
I switched out to some medium Old Man Emus on my 2014 Limited after the stock XREAS system started leaking at 120k. Rides great and the slight lift allows me to get onto some steeper trails without worrying about pulling my front bumper off.
I replaced my Limited’s stock suspension with Bilstein 5100’s at 65k myself...the truck rides great on and off road now, literally no downsides.
My Truck feels almost as cushy as my dad's 22 TRD Pro. I can hit speed bumps at easily 10mph faster without discomfort, it rides great on forest service roads and has less body roll than stock.
Do not go OEM. At a minimum, put on Bilstein 5100 shocks at stock height and improve ride and lessen nose dive on braking. I got a set of 4 last year for my son's 1999 3rd gen and paid $300 for install $400 for parts. We used the stock 99 tall springs. I put 5100 shocks on my 2011 and lifted the front 2" and put trd springs on the back to level. Way better off road and firmer on road.
If you have the $, Bilstein 5100s run fantastic on Toyota pickup and 4wd/4runners. They are a little pricey but you'll feel the difference.
I had Old Man Emu shocks and springs put in my 07 sport. The XREAS was sagging severely to the left and was leaking fluid.
