I put in 7 inch hella ipf style lights with h4 bulbs, work great, cost a bit more than Chinese knockoffs, but not $200.
Owner reviews for headlights
For anyone looking to do a headlight swap on a first gen these are the (TYC) lights I purchased:
Get something OEM-equivalent, DEPO black housing headlights are a popular option. Most brands should be similar enough if you stick to OEM-style, but DEPO is the only brand I personally have experience with.
Oem is the best option, you can find deals on eBay or online sometimes, second best is depo aftermarket brand replacement headlights, not as good quality but the price is right.
On the driver side, I installed both Phillips H4656 (Low/High Beam) and Phillips H4651 (High Beam). On the passenger side I left the old (over 25 years old) e-code with H1/H4 halogen bulbs.
I work at a body shop and I use TYC when I can. They are the best aftermarket HL supplier.
I went from a base to a limited. Honestly, the headlights are worth it.
i constantly have other drivers flash me while i drive at night. i do believe these headlights produce a lot of glare.
I hate that my 2016 Focus needs to go to the dealership for recoding just to replace the damn headlights.
In my experience they're pretty bad. I had to replace my stock headlights '03 9-3(because all the clips that held the low beams where broken off) I went from barley being able to see at night to still not really being able to see at night. Another problem was the TYCs were missing a piece at the bottom so there was a pretty big panel gap between the bumper and light. The one good thing about them was the headlights themselves looked great.
Edit: As a broke HS student I put weather stripping between the panel gap, and that made it look pretty good. This was 6 years ago they might have improved, but I kinda doubt it
