Battery OPTIMA or OEM Mercedes
That's all I'll run in my aircooled cars. They're not exactly light, but you can mount them sideways and they'll never leak. Those 2 features alone are worth the price of admission. Rust sucks and so does battery acid.
spend the $100 on an optima its well worth it
Optima Yellow Top. You can play the stero (amp/sub) all day and the car still starts. I've done it
Optima Orange Top.
I would say if you have problems with lights dimming and stuff when you are using ur electrical accessories, then get an Optima battery, also if you have a sound system in your car I'd recommend an Optima
optima red top fits fine in my 87gti, cut some plastic stuff to fit underneath so it would hold a little tighter, there were a few mm of space between the lip on the battery and the metal lip that is supposed to secure it.
NC-GTI, I haven't been in a VW since my '82 Rabbit back in the mid 80's but a good friend who's owned a Corrado, Rabbit, Fox, Jetta and now a GTI has had too many battery failures and his recommendation of the Optima battery is just some good info I'm passing along.
The VW battery tray in the 91 GTI is trying to eat my Optima The little bracket that stays in the car that normally holds the bottom lip of the battery is cutting through the case of the Optima because of the 6-pack design of the case. I had to use a small section of wood to put between them to keep it from cutting it any worse. The tie down bracket that can be removed from the car doesn't fit the Optima very well either, again because of the the 6 pack case shape. I had to use a grinder wheel to grind a section out of the bracket so it would fit around the cylinder shape of the case.
I just popped the plastic bottom edge off the factory battery and put it on a new replacement one from Autozone for something like $69. Same size and fit and post placement as factory Varta but made by Johnson Controls (I think). I personally would not buy another Optima. In the four-wheeler world, I've heard many complaints of premature failures. I've used red-tops as well as yellow-tops in my Land Rover and had to have them warranteed within 2 years of purchase due to sudden failures.
FYI... My first red top didn't last very long because I don't drive my car much. The car would sit so long that it would drain the battery, and so I was constinantly recharging it which is apparently not good for the battery.
