Engine oil Castrol or Shell
About $22 for 5 Qts. of Castrol (you can buy it on Amazon or at Walmart for a decent price). Filter is about $4.00 or more if you buy a premium filter.
Germany, 320d, 2008, 280000km, Castrol Edge 5w-30. Every 15000km
Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 in my 09 e90 335d (m57)
Supposedly should be changed every 13k miles but I do 7500 to hopefully help extend the life of the timing chain.
Castrol high mileage 5w-30 every 3 to 5k
Any other oil I have tried made my lifter tick super loud in cold weather
I use Castrol Edge 0W-40 in my '08 328, N52. Based on used oil analysis from Blackstone Labs, I'm at a 6K mile change interval.
The OEM oil filter worked well to keep insolubles low, and after 8,570 miles on this fill of Castrol High Mileage, the 2.8 TBN shows the oil had active additive to spare.
I’ve a 01 330ci with 284kms on it and I’ve been running Rotella 5w-40 T6 for a few years and it’s been really good. Keeps it good and clean for 10k change intervals. I probably end up adding 2-3L over that time, which was a vast improvement from when I got the car 30k ago.
I switched from Castrol Edge 0W-40 to Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 on my E46 325Ci and feel it runs a touch better and doesn't burn as much oil. Before I was adding 1L per \~3000km, now maybe 1L per 5-6000km...
Castrol Europeans 0W40 is my typical go-to but Mobil-1 is great, get whichever is cheaper.
I'm using Castrol GTX 20W50 because it's the only 20W50 that I can easily find locally. I tried Rotella 15W40 but I found that it gave somewhat low oil pressure on my old engine.
