The replacement thermostat came from BMW. No problems this time.

Make sure you use a Mazda OEM thermostat. I wouldn’t trust anything but OEM for those.
Pros: reliable, trustworthy
Cons: non-OEM not trusted

Buy an OEM thermostat from Mazda. The aftermarket ones are sometimes not identical.
Pros: OEM quality, identical fit

Changed to genuine thermostat, no change. Needle tends to dip on higher load highway driving, but only occasionally. Obd temp is between 77C-88C.
Cons: no change in performance, needle dips on load
