Tires Continental or GT Radial
Continental extreme contact DWS are what I've had in my RS for three years for non summer seasonal driving. They are excellent.
Tire wise it came with Continental Extreme Contact DWS I ran last year and through winter. I now have Falken RT615K+ on but will change as the cold approaches.
I have them on my Golf Alltrack and like them. I replaced the factory Continental ProContact TX tires. They are quieter then the Conti's. I bought them because I feel they are the perfect tire for the PNW. They are good in the rain, dry, light snow, dirt roads.
I think the question you really want to know the answer to is what is the load index on factory 17” tires...my 2018 SE has 17” Continental Procontact TX tires with a load index of 99 (1709lb or 775kg).
I have this wheelset on my Trek Emonda ALR 5. Running tubeless with Continental GP 5000 TL tires.
Although tubeless, I always carry a spare tube, a couple tire levers, CO2, and a patch kit w/ boot. Be prepared.
Sealant works really well on small punctures to point I’ve had a few that I didn’t even realize until after I got home and saw the small bit of sealant plugging up the hole. Only time I had an issue was when I ran over a bunch of broken glass: a small piece got wedged in front tire and prevented sealant from fully plugging the hole. Still, I was able to ride home safely with about 30psi remaining in the tire. Once I got back, I pulled the glass piece and sealant filled the gap. I did top off the sealant inside. No issues since.
Pirelli's quality is second to none as well. Hankooks are also great, used them for tracking a 2007 BMW 335I and those babies were great. I really like Continentals too...the Conact 2 Summer tire was best rubber I ever owned....though not in winter
I’m running Extreme Contact Sports all around. They’re pretty solid.
Continentals are great and I'll probably give them a go next. UHP review was very positive for the Conti Sport Contact 6
I went through a few sets of DW's on my mk4. I finally caved and bought PSS's and will never go back. The wet performance was unreal on the DW's, but they left a lot to be desired in the dry after having some time with PSS's.
I certainly hope they've improved them since '99, because mine were definitely Craptinentals. It was like driving on roller skates.
