I run Castrol's Syntec 5W 50 in my TD... it's CD and CF rated so fine for IDI TDs like yours... great in the extreme cold but thick enough for the summer.

i use the Elf Excellium DID 505.01-spec 5W40 in my non pd-tdi. no problems either.
Used the rotella for the first 90,000. Switched to AMSOIL so I can change the oil half as often. I'm good with either one. The car has 146,000 and runs as strong as ever.
if you have a 98 VR6, i know for a fact you would be needing a ZF type. The ZF type can be identified by the steering racks housing body. ZF has a waffle pattern and is made out of Aluminum.
I have used Rotella full synthetic 5w40 from day 1. No complaints. I work for an oil distribution company, and get to ask people questions that have been in the business before I was born. Eveyone of them says the same thing. Shell has forgotten more then the others will ever know.
basically the dirtier a paper filter gets the less it flows...not true for K&N
the paper filter is better for maybe the first 500 miles, after that the K&N breathes better and does not lose its air flow/filtration over time
Filters, I'm parcial towards Mann products, if you can find them. Never a problem with Wix.
I'm on my second fuel injector at 92,000 miles....i have a chip GIAC.....don't know if my stock injectors are getting worked O.T. but it is what it is i still enjoy my VW DUB.
I have bosh platnum on there and they look like crap after 2,000-3,000 miles.
