Mann Oil filter

I paid $15 for the oil filter and gasket from the dealership. When I opened it up it says Mann on the filter. Lol I paid $35 for the 5w40 oil. Mann cabin filter for $6. Since it's at 40k I bought a engine air filter as well for $10..Mann brand. When I first got the car is was $50 which I didn't mind but then they doubled the price. The first time I changed it the filter was so bad, which made me believe they never changed it. Now since I do it myself it never looks that dirty.

Pros: easy to change, good quality
Cons: price doubled
Mileage: 40000 km

Mann Oil filter

I have done my own routine service ever since, with Mobil 10W-40 and the Mann 950/4 filter, which is the largest one I can cram between the oil cooler and the left engine mount.

Pros: largest filter fits
Part number: 950/4

It's been a year since I changed mine and several thousand kms and I haven't had any warning lights or problems since. I used a Mobil 1 Extended Performance Filter M1C-451.

Pros: no warning lights, no problems
Part number: M1C-451

Mobil Oil filter

it was the Oil filter cartridge o ring that had become hard and did not compress to seal the filter any longer. Getting the new one, a mobile 1 filter, I could immediately tell the difference. the new one was pliable and I could tell it would seal nicely. it did...no more leak. The car also had developed a slight stutter at idle. very sensitive, these cars. the stutter is gone too.

Pros: no more leak, pliable
Cons: hard, did not compress

  • Warning light:

So glad I found this post! I was getting the low oil pressure warning on my 2012 Passat. It would go away after the car warmed up. I changed the oil, dropped the oil pan and cleaned it and the pickup tube. They were already in really good shape. I changed the oil filter too of course. Anyway the light isn't coming on at all now.

Pros: light isn't coming on
Cons: low oil pressure warning

OEM Volkswagen Oil filter

I changed out the factory fill today at 2,347 miles. I could not find any VW 502 oil in 0w30 locally, so I used Valvoline MST 5w40 which is certified for VW 502, so no warranty concerns. I also used an OEM VW filter which was 15 bucks delivered also on line, but I hope to find those locally for a bit less in the future. I could see small shiny specs of debris in the creases of the old filter, which is why I (and many folks) don't like to run factory fill oil very long.

Pros: OEM quality
Cons: expensive
Mileage: 2347 km

Bosch Oil filter

  • Warning light:

I have a 2001 Passat 1.8T, on which the oil and filter have been changed every 6 months or 3K mi, whichever came first. The dealer performed the first 4 oil changes, to the 2-year point, then I took over, always with a Bosch or Napa Gold (Wix) filter. Having received the engine sludge notice, I switched from name-brand dinosaur oil to Mobil 1 at my most recent oil change (last month, 23K miles). Although I receive no adverse temperature or indications at the instrument panel, the valve cover SEEMS perhaps to be running a bit hotter than before. What really concerns me is that, when the engine is warmed up, if I stop and idle it for 30 seconds or so, the engine starts making what to my semi-practiced (but new to VWs!) ear sounds perhaps like valve, lash adjuster, or camshaft bearing clatter. The sound emanates from the rear/cylinder 3-4 area, away from belt-driven accessories, etc. Does this sound like an early symptom of sludge, perhaps associated with insufficient oil pressure at idle? Given my history of frequent oil changes and otherwise by-the-book or better maintenance, I would not have expected to be a sludge victim at 23K miles. I suppose I could have just installed a defective brand-new Bosch filter, or I suppose the synthetic oil could have loosened some sludge from my dinosaur days, but these seem like real stretches for an explanation. Any suggestions regarding diagnostics?

Cons: valve, lash adjuster clatter
Mileage: 37015 km
