If you are buying Airtex pumps, I wouldn't be surprised if they're natural failures. 2 years ago, I installed the first replacement in a 5.7 Ram truck. It lasted 4 months. I replaced it, warrantied part, lasted -3 days-, replaced it again.

I went through 4 Airtex pumps in about 1.5 years in my car. I seriously thought there was a problem with my tank or fuel but it was clean as a whistle in there. Finally upgraded to a Walbro and haven't had an issue since.
The hard start issue appears to have fixed itself though. Starts just as well as it did with the dual pump setup now.
The car doesn't like to start as quickly as it did with the two pump setup. As the car gets hotter and I do a few restarts while running errands the car is even harder to start. Yesterday resulted in me being stranded in my kid's daycare parking lot for about 5 minutes before it eventually started up again. The pump still fires like it should in the acc position and the car otherwise runs fine which tells me the fuel pump is doing its job.
I was able to pull off this conversion on Sunday. Car runs well. Super easy install.
I sold an Airtex fuel pump for a Mk2 GTI that had the factory part number filed off (like the part in the OP), and it had been painted, and you could see where Bosch was printed on it under the paint.
