I have a 2013 328i with the N20. At around 140k kms I had a couple separate mechanics bring up the timing chain unprompted and note that mine may be on its last legs. I can’t say I noticed any major symptoms or signs, definitely no lights on the dashboard.

I bit the bullet and paid $3500 CAD to get it done at one of the best shops around, during which they do the valve cover gasket and a bunch of other key maintenance items.

They showed me how loose the chain was and brittle the guide was, so it was a good call. I’ve known I would eventually have to get this done.

Car is running mint since then.

Before I switched I had 4 sidewall tears, one bent wheel, and one cracked wheel. $3000 in damage. After I switched, zero issues a year and a half later. Smoother ride and less road noise too.
Untapped market - BMW E39 530i - can find decent examples 3k or less.
Reliable 3.0L inline 6, 5spd ZF gearbox, all aluminum suspension components, steering rack with a ton of angle stock, factory power steering cooler.
A good oil filter (I say BMW as I found they fit the tightest, best seal compared to even the MANN/MAHL filters specific to my N20)
Just change my original 01 expansion tank, cause i changed my Radiator. Part held 170000km and 23 years. Just get another original one ;)
I've had the original one fail back in 2016, replaced with genuine BMW replacement and it's been good as gold.
There is a good chance you can take apart the unit with a heat gun and re-seal it ive done it before on Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM, Dodge... Those headlights are a good $3K a pop new in Canada for OEM BMW.
The white tank has never been the issue for me, leaks are always in the radiator frame surrounding that tank. Somewhere at the bottom, probably where the lower hose goes. The plastic is brittle crap and it develops micro-fractures that become cracks over time.
i called bmw for a new windshield on my e60. 1400 in labor and 1400 for the windshield.
Hopefully you have better luck than I did. Had similar crack in a brand new 5 series(the car was only a few months old when it happened)and they wouldn’t cover it. I had to go through my insurance and pay a small deductible. No other company did OEM BMW windshields in my area so I had to go the same dealership to get it done. Cost was around $2500
