My E550 gets M1 0W40 every 5k, with a new fleece Hengst filter. I don't drive it hard until I see past 80C on the water temp (I don't have an oil temp gauge- only the E63s do). Basically the same procedure I use on my S54 BMWs, and every performance car I've ever owned
Reviews of Hengst parts For Business

I do the oil every 5k on both and use liquid moly 5w40 and a hengst filter.
I use Liqui Moly Leichtlauf and Hengst filters from FCP Euro on my 1.8T Passat. Highly recommend.
My daily full service from BMW was €800 ($860). Got it done with indy for €287 ($310) using approved Castrol LL04 oil, and Hengst fuel, oil, air, and cabin filters.
I use liqui moly but I have my doubts about whether it actually is *the best* oil. I'm sure it's good, but any oil that meets the spec called out in your owners manual is "good". I place more weight on the filter than anything else. Hengst for me, get that Fram shit outta here.
Liqui Moly Oil change 5W-40 with Hengst Filter
I get my fuel filters from ID Parts. I use the Hengst brand, they're an OEM supplier. I've never needed to 'prime' the system after replacing the filter
Since I've owned it, I've performed all the work listed below with genuine VW parts when possible. I've also flushed the oil with Liqui-Moly engine flush, and performed a Seafoam cleaning. Afterwards, oil was changed to Liqui-Moly 5w40 Synthoil Premium and new Hengst oil filter.
Official VW filters are Hengst's with a little VW logo and part number printed on the end just note that the filters do not include the gasket for the oil-can drain plug (dunno if that's on the mkIII's, but it's on the mkIV's). Just means you can't really drain the can, just unscrew it and be quick to minimize the amount of oil that goes flying
What soured my relationship with them was that I had replaced the cabin filter myself about 3 weeks earlier, checked it after they serviced it, and it was still my Hengst air filter (which I had marked with a few dots), and not a new one.
