Ive reinstalled another new HEPU(made in germany) pump due to mileage. I don't think anything is wrong with the old one. When I cleaned the o-ring seal contact area on the block it was corroded right where it left an imprint.

If you're worried, replace both the water pump and thermostat. I would use a Mahle, Facet, or Wahler thermostat, and either a Hepu or Graf water pump.

When I was shopping around for cooling system replacement parts, I wasn't sure if GRAF or HEPU made a better metal-impellar water pump. I ended up purchasing both the GRAF and HEPU, and found the HEPU to have a better fit and finish compared to the GRAF.

My original plastic impeller pump failed at 145k miles. I replaced with with a metal impeller pump (Hepu IIRC).
