If I were young again, I'd buy one of these, a 2000s Corolla, or a Saturn. They're great for learning all the high-mileage maintenance stuff that is the bulk of a mechanic's work - suspension work like struts/bushings/tie-rods/ball-joints, CV boots, fluid changes, thermostat/sensors, plugs/wires, and troubleshooting the random broken emissions (vacuum lines) and electrical issues that pop up in old cars.

Pros: great for learning maintenance
Vehicle: Toyota Corolla

If there's still bounce when you depress the fender and no handling problems, I wouldn't change the struts. I don't think the valve cover gasket is worth fixing. Someday you will need to work on something on the head, you can replace it then. It won't leak a tablespoon of oil per year, it just spreads a lot.

Pros: no handling problems
Cons: leaks a lot

How does it ride? Is it a little rough? And by that I mean is it bumpy? If yes then you’ll need to do some struts and shock maintenance.

Cons: rough, bumpy ride
Vehicle: Toyota Avalon

OEM Toyota Strut assembly

My 2013 Corolla with 230,000+ km just had the struts done. Truth be told, even with them freshly done, I don't notice much difference in the drive.

Pros: struts freshly done
Cons: no noticeable difference
Vehicle: Toyota Corolla
Mileage: 230000 km

OEM Toyota Strut assembly

New struts are on the way for my 225k 2006 Prius.

Around it for a little over 5 months and it's got to be easily one of the favorite cars I've ever owned.

Super simple to work on and so reliable I love this thing!

Only other issue I can think of is that the coolant control valve is making the noises of it being on its way out. No code yet but I'm just waiting.

Pros: reliable, easy to work on
Cons: coolant control valve
Mileage: 225000 km

OEM Toyota Strut assembly

My 2008 just rolled to 194k and has the original battery as far as I know. I've put 42k miles on it and have only changed fluids and filters. I did replace all 4 struts but half the reason was I installed a lift kit, other half was some consistent funny wear on a rear tire. Replaced an axle since I damaged the threads. Replaced the sway bar links because they were seized to the struts. It's been a great little unit.

Pros: great little unit
Mileage: 194000 km
