I have a BMW e36 and it is standard practice to run an extra quart of oil at the track to prevent oil starvation and lifter tick. I have been doing it for years with dozens of track days along with many other people I know with no issues.

This seems like a good place to piggyback a related question: I worry about my car burning oil (apparently common for Hyundai) so I try to keep an eye on it. One thing I'm not sure of and don't want to mess up is adding more oil. I know the type and even the brand used but when adding it how do I tell if it's full or not? Do I just need to add a bit at a time and check with the dipstick again and again until I get it to the top mark? That seems like a pain in the ass.

Exactly. Change the oil pressure switch. I would spend $50 and get an oil pressure test set with gauge and check pressure to be sure. Oil must be synthetic that meets proper spec. 5w-40 mobil1 European does.

I've been using 15w40 diesel motor oil in the AMC/Jeep flat tappet engines for nearly 20 years. Castrol makes a line called GTX Classic that's formulated for flat tappet engines as well

I just put Amsoil High Mileage, 0w20 in my 2012 Camry to see if it will benefit my engine with 221,000 on it. I switched from Mobil 1, which I used for years changing at 5K intervals, but had to keep topping off very often. The engine flush was excellent, the oil I drained only had 1500 miles on it and it came out looking like liquid coal! So a cleaning did take place, I'll see how it goes.

Been using the recommended bmw 5w-30 up until recently. However been having to top up 5L every month so the shop switched over to 10w-40 and I haven't seen that I needed to top up yet, but it has only been one and half months so far since the service.

I used US Mobil 1 0W-40 in my old 1.8T (mk4). I used it for two changes (finished off a box) and always found it was burnt at only 3k miles. You could smell it as soon as I pulled the dipstick out.
