I decided to replace all the rings with a new set from MAHLE (Part #41926CP, $69.79 for a full set from RockAuto.com- much less expensive than buying them in a VW-branded package).

my 81mm JE's are .018 top, .020 2nd ring.. its worked so far
I ran a Honda service department for years. If you have oil in the plugs - engine is shot. If it wasn’t a Honda you may change rings to fix the problem.
Ok I had the my 06a block machined to 81.5 mm in order to take out some damage to 2 of the cylinders. Just got the block back and I'm getting everything ready for install but all my piston ring end gaps are big.
After an oil consumption test mine was using ~ 1.8l/1k miles. VW replaced the piston rings under warranty... we'll see how it goes
the oil pressure light came on for a second. I checked the oil and it was very low (despite having recently checked it before a trip. I brought it to the dealer and they let me know about the piston ring TSB. If Volvo decided that your car burns too much oil, they replace the piston rings.
They are junk. 2.4 GMC 20 over oil ring grooves to wide rings slip off expander
I had a 2015 one, changed the oil every 6k miles, still burned oil at an alarming 500 miles/liter at 104k so I sold it. Timing chains also went at 102k.
The piston ring design is faulty on Volvo's 2.0 drive-e engine from its 2015 introduction to halfway through 2016. They get fouled with carbon, allowing oil to blow by and leading to excessive oil consumption. I started getting low-oil messages right around 80k miles, and by the time I got it in for an oil consumption test it was burning a quart every 600 miles.
I just went through this on my 2018 Passat SE with massive oil consumption. Get the dealer to do a oil consumption test. Mine failed on the 2nd test and had the rings and pistons replaced. Then it happened again less than 1000 miles afterwards (used 1.8qt in about 700 miles) and I just got my car back today after the long block was replaced (Basically they replaced the engine).
