Mahle Pistons

Ya, I recommend Mahle's for most builds. In fact we like them so much that we had a some custom made on a heavier duty forging, with a heavier duty wrist pin- so we can use them on bigger power builds then the standard PowerPak pistons which are actually somewhat light duty.

Pros: heavier duty forging
Cons: PowerPak pistons light duty

get a set of mahle 4032 alloy pistons unless you're going for very high power levels. you'll barely hear bad things from 2618 alloy piston owners, but 2618's have been known to piston-slap on cold starts, depending on the tolerances of the build.

Pros: good for high power
Cons: piston-slap on cold starts

JE Pistons

I stroked mine out to 2.1L in 2012 using ALH (TDI) crank. It's the best upgrade I've done to the car outside of a BT. I never heard of a stroked engine running hotter than stock. My coolant temp is always at stock 190 F.

Pros: best upgrade, coolant temp stock
Cons: pistons get slap happy
Mileage: 10000 km

Mitsuboshi Pistons

For what it's worth, I had a balance shaft/oil pump belt break and get caught up in the timing belt on my '94 Galant. This caused the timing belt to skip several teeth (who knows how far) and bent all the valves. It left damage on all pistons, somewhat similar to the damage I see here. I smacked a head on it from the junk yard and proceeded to drive it another 15k miles without any related trouble.

Pros: drove 15k miles without trouble
Cons: damage on all pistons
Vehicle: Mitsubishi Galant
Mileage: 24140 km

JE Pistons

Here's an update for anyone that might find this useful in the future. I ended up sticking with the 1.8 crank and my JE forged 7.4cc 9A pistons in my PL block. I decked a massive .115" from the block resulting in a deck clearance of -.011" (pistons stick out a bit). This should give a CR of 8.65:1 with these 7.4cc pistons, ABA head gasket, and my 47cc combustion chambers.

Pros: CR of 8.65:1

JE Pistons

JE are the best pistons on the market hands down. I know from personal experience. The OEM rods rifeled and ARP bolts will hold 400whp so no need to upgrade for your NA but Pistons are a must for a quality build.

Pros: best pistons on market

DNJ Pistons

I am only running stock and used stainless steel, also have had the DNJ pistons in mine now for about 2 years and they appear to hanging in there at least on stock power. I did switch the rings to Total Seal rings and not DNJ, don't know if that made a difference or not but it felt like a better choice.

Pros: hanging in there

Cummins Pistons

The piston was given to me by a friend who got it from a Dodge dealership. The defect has something to do with the wrist pin, it seems to be stuck partly-pressed in, further in one side than out the other.

Cons: wrist pin stuck
Part number: 3067474
