Nitto Motivo All Season, nice grip and road feel got a set for my tc1 $700 out the door
I always get Continental's "control contact sport SRS+" for my 1st gen. Not the most expensive, but I wouldn't describe it as shoestring either.
I got a set of Zeetex HP1000 215/45R17XL 91W BSW ($46.04/ea) from giga-tires.com. Total including FedEx Home delivery was $226.06 They're a performance summer tire and I've been pretty happy with the ride and life of them.

I've slashed sidewalls and upgraded to thicker sidewalls (Toyo AT 2), never encountered a sidewall puncture after that.
I made it just shy of 60k. Now I have Coopers. The Good Years were way better in ice and snow.
Depends on the tires. If he put on Walmart special ling-longs and you put contin or Michelin The difference will be pretty big.
My 1000 has a set of Pirelli Angel GT's that I'm still undecided on
I work at a dealership and I will say that I will never buy Goodyears, they dry rot faster than any tire I’ve seen
