Fixed many ls engines with excessive oil burning by switching them to t4 rotella 15w-40. The rotella t4 flavor of it is a fantastic oil. If you're engine has good oil pressure and isnt burning oil then theres probably no need to for it but its not gonna hurt a thing. Gen 3 ls engines arent some super tight tolerance engine, i probably wouldn't put 15-40 in a motor that calls for 0-20 but your 5.3 will not care at all.

Pros: fixed oil burning, fantastic oil

He may be using it for the 15w40 weight for noise or lower oil pressure. I ran Rotella in my 94 F150 with the 5.8l gas engine because I bought it with a slight knock. After a while I dropped down to the 10w30 Rotella and ran it for year, lifted mud truck driven daily and in the woods on weekends. It will be fine, just get some clarification on why. I currently run Rotella 10w30 in my 4.2l Envoy.

Pros: ran for year

Castrol Engine oil

I'm seeing a lot of strife around these comment parts on this post; but I will tell you this: If previous owner used only conventional, you best use conventional for the sake of the rubber seals on the block. If you want to eventually run synthetic after your first rebuild, be my guest, although I would recommend going the sohn adapter at that point, just for extra insurance that what you're doing is good for the engine.

I don't know where you're located, but I've personally ran Castrol GTX oil in all my cars up until now; the only thing is, it's harder and harder to find conventional oil that is of thinner grades. Which isn't a bad thing, because the RX8 needs thicker oil than what's on the oil cap anyway! 5w-30 should be your minimum thickness, but really, it's recommended you go thicker, to like 10w-40 for year-round, and 20w-50 for track days or extremely hot climates. There's this shell oil for diesel that's rated at 15w-40 that I was going to potentially pick up and start using. Yeah your fuel economy is gonna drop a tad, but you're really doing it for the sake of your bearings.

P.S. get an oil catch can that vents to atmosphere if legal in your area. It will save you heaps of headaches down the road ????

Pros: good for bearings, thicker oil recommended
Cons: fuel economy drops

I only run 5-40 Full Synthetic on my Armada and all my vehicles in the past. I've never had an issue and only changed the oil once a year or whenever 7500 miles hit. As for what brand, Shell Rotella T6 5-40.

Pros: no issues, extended drain intervals
Vehicle: Nissan
Mileage: 7500 km

Castrol Engine oil

I recently changed the oil in a diesel Passat (150,000 kms) which had Castrol Edge put in 12,000 kms ago during the last service by a VW dealer. I have changed many oils in VW diesels and found the Castrol oil that came out to be the dirtiest, sticky, staining and sort of gritty oil ever.

Pros: cleaning out the grunge
Cons: dirtiest, sticky, gritty oil
Mileage: 150000 km
