Engine oil LIQUI MOLY or Castrol
Random guy who works on these cars here, change it at 5-6k regularly. Ignore the casuals here who don’t work on these cars, and especially Ignore the factory recommended interval. Your engine will last much longer, you’ll reduce wear on the timing chain, turbo, as well as other components. You’ll also reduce the chance of your piston rings getting glued together with carbon creating excessive oil consumption. Just change it. I recommend liquimoly oil.
5k or less with Liquimoly. Just had oil pan and upper timing cover replaced at 123k miles (plastic parts leak/ fail bc of heat cycles) and my timing chain looked like new, and not one spec of metal or debris on the bottom end. Unitronic stage 1+ since 75k miles.
My local shop in Canada does it for $125 plus tax and uses liqui moly oil.
I have an MX-5 with that engine, Mazda uses Castrol Edge 0w20 but you can use a heavier oil and sime say it reduces wear. The purpose of the 20 weight is fuel economy.
I live in Turkey vw service uses Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL
Liqui moly is the best stuff in the market! I have been running it in my ST for years. It runs better and has lower oil temps than motorcraft.
So, the cause for VANOS to work as shit was an oil. I put Motul and engine drunk it like it was a water. After oil change to Castrol magnatec, engine works like a charm.
I use 15W-40 Liqui Moly Touring High Tech mineral oil. The filter you buy from BMW is made by Mahle so I would suggest that.
I use liquidmoli on my 13’. Have for the past 4 changes every 10k miles. Been great so far!
I run 5w40 syntec and I eat about 1/2-3/4 oil every 5,000 miles. It will eat it more if I drive it really hard.
