Engine oil RED LINE or Mannol
It's run fine on Mannol with over 25k miles so far.
I am running Redline 0w-30 during the warmer months. It was the most reasonably priced group 5 ester base (with great reviews) that I could find. Oil temps during my last autoX event were down 15 degrees F, compared to a similar day with the factory recommended 0w-20.
My 07 Passat has 236k. I change oil every 5k, cam follower every 70-100k (20k is serious overkill), lots of coil pack changes (like 4 or 5), and that is about it.
Redline 5w-30 with an OEM filter. No issues and smoother start up.
You can 5L of compliant Mannol for less than £20.
OP I have the same car and engine as you, I've been using the cheap Mannol stuff, whichever is cheapest. Also whichever the cheapest oil filter is from ECP at the time. Car is currently on 120k and I've been doing this for at least 5 years and it hasn't eaten itself yet!
You can actually get decent quality oil which is not from an expensive brand for pretty cheap, particularly if you buy a 20l jug.
For example, Mannol offer fully synthetic oils which meet OEM specifications
I tried the redline 5w30 previously which has very high levels of moly (>800ppm) and the results were not as good as the moly-less 5w40.
I've tested both those oils, and was not impressed with the results. Both oils still needed changing at 5k.
