I used to use mobil1 5w30 for 2 or 3 oil changes then switch to Total 5w40 full syn and it burns way less. I think I burn a whole quart every 3 or 4k using 5w30 but with Total 5w40 I burnt probably hald that.
Pros: burns way less
Cons: burn a quart
i run 0w30 in my jetta 2.0. fully synth. have for 33,000 miles, no problems, other then better gas mileage
Pros: better gas mileage
Cons: no problems

Personally I use 8-10k change intervals on my Jetta, its rated for that, and i use the right oil.
