I just changed the oil in my MK7 GTI (around 300hp) with MOTUL X-cess (5w40) and my god did it ever make a difference!
Best you can do is get your hands on some Restore and protect, 5w30 is fine, 0w20 will get you better fuel economy but a little more wear and obviously 5w40 is the other way round.
Use semi synthetic 10w30 replace at 3k kms. As for oil I try different brands from motul, gulf to fanfaro.
Think the last oil change I did was with Motul 7-series (fully synthetic) 10w40 because central Italy gets HOT
I've recently switched to Motul because the Castrol pouring spouts seem to have gone away and Motul's also become more available.
I've put whatever motul 10w40 semi I can get cheapest into my blackbird every 10k miles for the last 140k and it's fine.
Been using Valvoline Restore and Protect so I’m gonna change it even more frequently for the next few changes
My truck is rough cosmetically, but the engine runs beautifully at 175k.

Motul 8100, was using mobil 1 but had problems with it blowing past the rings during high rpm’s and getting into the intake
