Engine oil VALVOLINE or RED LINE
Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 also meets Volkswagen specifications.
Using Redline racing 50W in a SCCA 1.6L production engine with an oil temp of about 210 to 215 degree (F) on a hot southeastern race weekend. Hot oil pressure is about 70 to 75 psi at WOT and about 30 psi after a session in the paddock prior to shut down.
For the past 5 seasons, I've been running 5w-30 Mobil 1 but recently switched to Red Line 30 Wt with no ill effects. Typical oil temps (racing on in the Mid-Atlantic area with temperatures and humidity in the 90s) are 250ish with 30-45 PSI hot oil pressure at full chat.
i use valvoline 5w 30 and it hasent done me wrong...yet
I also have a 2.0 and run the valvoline synthetic. I started after 2500m and am currently at 29k. No scientific results here other than keeping track of mileage in a little notebook and looking back at the first month compared to the most recent - I'm averaging about 7mpg more.
All these problems are not present in the Valvoline SuperSynth 5W-40 sample. Furthermore, the results from this Valvoline are well below the Universal averages for this engine. This suggests that I should be able to run this oil for at least another 1000-2000 miles and still get an excellent report out of it! With it, my engine runs bit smoother and quieter especially at idle. At high engine speeds the engine feels more responsive and more lively. Another difference is that with Valvoline, I am observing improved efficiency. My 2.0 broke its own record of fuel efficiency: 34.3 miles to the gallon on high way. The improvement is 3.3-3.9 miles per gallon compared to Mobil1.
Interesting. I've been using Valvoline synpower 5w30 since 5k miles, currently almost 75K miles.
Mobil 1 0w-40 is approved by VW, Porsche, MB. If you don't mind the price, Redline 5w-40 is excellent for our 1.8T engines. From the oil analyses I've seen, Redline has shown a few \"Parts Per Million\" less in metal wear than Mobil 1 5w-30 or 0w-40. Redline has more Moly than most oils. But for me, a few PPM is insignificant over 7k-8k miles. I still use Mobil 1 though cause it's cheaper (Costco) and can be found anywhere.
on both my current 1.8T VW'S i use Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 Full synthetic- it's an oil that is approved by VW...and has all the right cleaners/additives in it.
Never tried Royal Purple but have used Redline a few times before and will continue to use it. Great stuff!
