Oil filter K&N or AMSOIL
A K & n oil filter is a good filter 2 use. I work at a car dealership and checking out the quality the k&n vs oem, the k&n is a better filter. I usually use them or mobile one on my car.
I use a K & N passat filter. Its the same (I think) you get the added oil capacity.
I run AMSoil European Blend (specifically for VW,AUDI, BMW,) and the filter as well. I change my oil around 4-5K depending on my driving during that time. My oil always comes out slightly 'browned' .... never dark.
I use K&N, just because my local discount always has it in stock.
I run the 5w30 Amsoil 15,000 mile stuff in our 1.8t... it gets changed once a year. Every 4 months i put a new filter on it and top it off. The samples i've sent in and been returned all looked good if the car is just a driver with some occasional track time i wouldn't sweat running Amsoil or any other really good synthetic 10k or more.
They're on the high end, though not the absolute best, in terms of the length of filter material/number of pleats. The construction quality is good - all metal and rubber, no cardboard. The cans are tough as hell.
I've been running K&N oil filters on my racecar for the better part of 4 years now - same engine, no rebuilds but I perform very regular maintenance. I regularly change the oil at the beginning of every season and proceed to thrash the crap out of my 1.8l 16v for about 1300 miles (most at or around the redline). I haven't had any ill effects due to low filtration, high pressure, low pressure, drain back, etc - all this on an engine that is six seasons old!!
I put one in the Passat a few months ago just for the sake of a better engineered product. It was a cold night for my turbocharged engine, so any greater power I felt I'm sure was imagined. Don't count on it. Just do it for a better quality filter that lasts longer.
K&N filter is not as good as OE and just about expensive.
Overpriced garbage. There is no proof that these synthetic type filters do any better job filtering than a high quality OEM or equivalent. I use OEM, for $13, at 10K miles pretty inexpensive and oil analysis is always good. OEM is best IMO.
