Oil filter K&N or OEM FORD
I personally use the Ford motorcraft OEM filters in the largest size that fits cleanly with a similar bypass pressure.
Every 5000 miles, it's time for 16 quarts of oil and a filter the approximate size of a Nalgene bottle.
I use the K&N 170 on my 1999 883C, have for years. Not sure why Amazon is saying "not for your model", I've literally been using it for the last 16 years and 70,000 miles, and have ordered 6 of them from Amazon over that time period.
Been running this on my 03’ hatch and it’s been great.
The oil, no, K&N filters I've been using for almost a decade. Doesn't seem to have any issues. And I like the 1 inch nut on it.
If opting for third-party filters, choose high-quality brands like WIX, Purolator, or K&N, which offer reliable alternatives that match Subaru’s specifications.
I personally don’t use k&n oil filters. They filter great but I’m not a fan of their flow.
I have pulled multiple K&n filters out that have looked a little bent like this. The smashed K&n is definitely shorter.
First and only time i tried a k&n filter the bypass valve did not open and oil sprayed everywhere .I Will never try one again.
Your best bet is to order the proper Mahle filter from your favorite e-tailer and keep it on standby. You could pick up a K&N at Cycle Gear but K&N have a bad reputation in the industry and I’d generally stay away from them.
