Oil filter K&N or OEM Mazda
Amsoil and Subaru filters. Other vehicles with horrible oil filter locations I use K&N because I can use a socket to pop them off.
I'm trying out that Rotella T6 5W-40 some of y'all talk about. Just snagged it off Amazon.
I also use K&N filters cause they've got a 1" nut welded on top.
DIY 7500mi interval engine oil using 5qt bottle of Mobil1 0w-20 fuel economy oil (takes the whole thing), a K&N HP-1008 filter (why, because it's so easy to wrench off every time), and a new 9956-41-400 aluminum washer.
I’ve been using K&N air and oil filters in mine for ten years. I run nothing else and will always run K&N. I’m happy with mine. Oil filter number HP1008. I would recommend. The one inch nut on top is often very helpful getting the filter out. I also run K&N oil and air filters in every vehicle I’ve ever owned. There is a noticeable difference in throttle response for the air filter, but I’ve never seen a difference good or bad in the oil filters.
No complaints from my 16 STI running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and K&N filter.
I’ve always used the OEM filter and Kirkland 0W-20 oil on my 2013 Skyactiv because I remember reading on the forums that due to the high compression of the engine the Mazda filter is specialized to handle that. Not sure if it’s true but no problems yet on 7.5k OCI.
Brand is personal preference tbh.. ive seen good and bad reviews with royal purple but no evidence that its actually bad. My main 2 that i use are Delo 15W-40 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Turbo Diesel oil and when thats sold out i run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 15w-40. And i put a K&N oil filter every time, changing oil at 5K miles and ive had no issues using it as a daily and autocross car. Backroads racing on the weekends, roadtrips, some drifting. Got 271K miles on it and no motor issues.
second oil change i used 0w-30 with a KN oil filter and it felt like it had more torque off the line. It could just be a placebo effect but that's what I feel.
i had a k&n on my car, immediately i noticed how much lighter and cheaper feeling it was compared to the previous bosch filter i had, also noticed it had a round gasket opposed to the flat one found on most oil filters, but despite this i ran it anyways, a month goes by and i notice my car is starting to leave puddles of oil everywhere, i put it in the shop and lift it up and sure enough the oil is leaking right from the shitty gasket on the k&n filter, replaced it with a bosch and haven’t had an issue
The K&N for my car was literally half as thick as the oe, and for that reason alone I swapped back. Yes it was the right one. Personally I’d rather just swap the filter than clean and re oil one that is probably doing a worse job
