Oil filter Mahle or OEM Volkswagen
I just recently purchased a mahle oil filter and it is made in austria, good to hear good quality stuff is still available after mann has let me down.
my 5k service on Friday, w/oil change, cost $54 w/filter (I supplied the oil since the dealer didn't stock it, from http://www.1stvwparts.com / for $6.80/ltr.).
I used the oil that is VW507.00 spec and can be bought at the VW dealer (approx retail cost is $7.00 per liter) Oil change capacity is approximately 13 liters. Oil filter part number is shown. I ordered the oil filter cap removal tool from http://www.samstagsales.com for $67.00 plus shipping.
ooooohhh thanks for the tip. oh yeah, mahle oil filter, new cable bushings, new rubber type valve cover gasket seal, valve cover gasket studs, dipstick bushings, oil, and myriad other things are waiting to go in...
motor oil: Valvoline 20W50 dinosaur oil with a Mahle filter
yeah the oem ones arent (THAT) expensive and they work great.
Pros - They have a real oil filter, the case is sturdier, they can handle more power and bigger displacements, they last forever without machining, the stock heads were pretty solid. Cons - They are harder to work on since there is more to assemble and disassemble, parts are slightly more expensive (not much though), they are harder to find, the different year engines had many variations so you have to know which one you've got.
I'd go for the Mahle or VW oil filter. Most aftermarket filters (Not sure about K&N) dont' have the check valve thingy in them...it's good for a few psi if I recall correctly...
oil filter that i run is off of a 1995 Eurovan Part # 074-115-561 hold about 1qt in the filter itself. had to slightly bent the secondary air pump a tad so it wouldnt rub.
I've used the larger oil filter for a couple changes and have gone back to the smaller stock filter for one reason. The drain-back valve on the diesel filter didn't work nearly as well as the valve on the smaller stock filter. I'd get a little valve rattle at startup with it which was noisy and embarassing to put it mildly. It did this consistently while the larger filter was used over 3 oil change intervals. Back to the stock filter now and all is silent.
