Subaru dealer tech in Australia, here we're having lots of starter motors failure going on.

Your vehicle being a 2020 on a factory battery means the 12v battery is nearing the end of it's service life, also that means your car has an available PAK file update for the TCM module that allows extra time for engine restart.

Pros: PAK file update available
Cons: starter motors failure
Vehicle: Subaru Forester

OEM Subaru Starter motor

My buddy has an earlier outback that came with that system. She’s got a lot of miles and honestly it’s totally fine. The one thing is that it does tend to start HARD. It cranks that sucker over like it owes it money

Pros: reliable
Cons: hard starting
Vehicle: Subaru Outback

I guess I’m in the minority, but I like the feature. I don’t know how you clowns all drive, but it saves quite a bit of gas in city driving and at least in my Tiguan it seems to work well. I’m still on my original battery and starter at 99K miles, which is more than I can say for some cars with conventional starters I’ve owned.

Pros: saves gas, works well
Vehicle: Volkswagen Tiguan
Mileage: 99000 km

Starters don’t generally “slow down” with age, really. You’ll just find that one day it quits working. I had a failed starter on a 2002 Jetta, probably at around 290-300k miles

Pros: quits working suddenly
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta
Mileage: 482803 km

I knew it had to be the starter. I had read somewhere that Subaru starters are hard to get, and my year in particular is faulty. So today, I took it to my dealer, and they said that the starter had to be replaced. On my bill, it said that the starter was taking excessive amperage. On a video on the Tube, that version of the starter has a faulty gear which causes trouble starting the engine.

Pros: faulty gear, excessive amperage
Cons: hard to get
Vehicle: Subaru
