OEM BMW Timing chain

My timing chain needed replacing a few weeks ago. It cost £4k, engine out job. But I caught it early, before it actually snapped, apparently it’s a common problem, needs replacing around 90k miles, drove perfectly fine, smooth af before and after, except it was hesitant to start, thought it was starter motor but no, was the timing chain

Pros: drove perfectly fine, smooth
Cons: hesitant to start
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 144840 km

2014 F30 with N26 engine. 157K miles on original timing chain and BMW tech just inspected chain and guide after removing valve cover and said both are good.

Pros: chain and guide good

OEM Audi Timing chain

My Q7 with the 3.0 Superchsrged has only adjusted timing due to chain wear by a degree or two from last I checked. 8 degrees is considered immediate chain replacement, and I have 100k miles

Pros: minimal chain wear
Vehicle: Audi Q7
Mileage: 100000 km

Front axels, timing chain and tensioner, and that’s it for 80,000 miles. I thought the timing chain problem was addressed by Audi. Nope. But love it and it runs great.

Pros: runs great
Cons: timing chain problem
Vehicle: Audi A4
Mileage: 80000 km

I have a 2013 328i with the N20. At around 140k kms I had a couple separate mechanics bring up the timing chain unprompted and note that mine may be on its last legs. I can\u2019t say I noticed any major symptoms or signs, definitely no lights on the dashboard.\n\nI bit the bullet and paid $3500 CAD to get it done at one of the best shops around, during which they do the valve cover gasket and a bunch of other key maintenance items.\n\nThey showed me how loose the chain was and brittle the guide was, so it was a good call. I\u2019ve known I would eventually have to get this done.\n\nCar is running mint since then.

Pros: Car is running mint
Cons: chain was loose, guide brittle
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 140000 km

Check engine light came on in our 2014 Q5. Turns out the timing chain needs to be replaced. At the same time the vehicle is burning excessive amounts of oil.

Cons: burning excessive amounts of oil

I do not trust these early n20 engines. I would advise spending the $3k-$4k for a “good” used engine with service records 2014 or newer. Replacing the timing chains is a big job and is not a guaranteed fix. I’ve been through this same scenario with a 328. Buy once cry once. I didn’t and I ended up removing/replacing the engine twice after doing timing chains on a high mileage engine that only lasted a couple months. Good luck!

Cons: not a guaranteed fix

Vehicle: BMW
