Tires Continental or Giti
We just had our third major snowfall of the season (11'' here in Denver) and again, I'm quite pleased with the way the Giti's have performed at 19K miles. Traction and braking are above average on packed snow and frozen snow.
I got a set of Continental Winter Contact SI from Canadian Tire. Pretty good tires imo.
I had them on my G. I liked them. They had great grip but were really comfortable. Only downside was a lack of steering feel, which I think was partly the car too. For a street car, soft sidewalls are good IMO.
I put these on my GTI before I sold it. Really liked the tire. It is more forgiving of cold morning temperatures than most other summers. I used it year-round in southern TN (never drove the car in the snow).
185 wide Michelin Energy savers to 205 Continental premiumcontact 6.
Holy shit the grip is amazing. In all conditions. Rain, cold, whatever. 20mins of track time even goes well
Continental Extreme Contact DWS06’s are excellent. Same size as the summer tires on the Golf R. Excellent winter traction, I’ve had these on all my GTI’s, and I just put them on my new R.
I installed 235f and 255r for a wider look. Continental extreme contact dsw. SL sidewall load range so not as solid as XL. I had to put more air in \~38lbs because they were mushy in curves but now seem fine. I trust them more in the rain than I would high performance tires.
Check out continental extremecontact sport. It was continentals competitor to the pilot super sport. Cheaper than ps4 and quite good!
I've the ProContract Tx as stock, and they are quiet on everyday surfaces, both at city and highway speeds. Ride is compliant and soft, but not squishy. However once they are on concrete highways, the road noise ruins it all.
After a week with the DWS, I've decided to replace them with the OEM version of Pirelli all seasons. The DWS on my car aren't "loud", but the noise they do give off (high pitched whine) drives me nuts at highway speed.
