Tires GISLAVED or FULDA
This was my second year on the Gislaved Nord Frost 5. I've had Blizzaks in the past and have used X-Ice, Nokian Hakepellita R, and Toyo (can't remember the model). The Gislaved is by far the best tire. The deep snow grip is by far the best of the bunch, the ice grip is second only to the X-Ice (which had the worst snow traction). Road noise is very low as well.
Nordfrost 5 (no studs) for the Tig (4motion), Marangoni 4ice on the Passat. I like the Nordfrosts better (had the Nordfrost 3 on the Jetta and loved them there too).
The sumitomos are no longer available. I found a website that has some Fulda's and Continentals in the size we like. They are more expensive, but better than the sumies.
another winter tire i was (am probably gonna get this week) is the Gislaved Nordfrost 5 (Part of the Continental Tire group). All ive been reading are great reviews and best bang for the buck.
The Gislaved snow tires and AWD came in very handy as rain turned to freezing rain and then snow along our route.
Fulda´s are the best tires you can get here for ultra low cost , but most vW people in Germany dislike Fulda´s .... they prefer spending 100´s of euros for Dunlop´s which i don´t like. I always buy Fulda´s or Continental´s...
Of course if this is a street car, and comfort is required and you dont drive like I do a set of all seasons in 205 like a fulda assuro on a 7 inch wide wheel will give you sufficient grip for the street. Cleats for the snow if you have to do that too, and they're pretty smooth over bumps...
They are ATP Magnum Elegance (9,5 x 18) with Fulda Tramp 4x4 Yukon (255/55/18).
