Tires Hankook or Nokia
Mine wore 11 year old nokians untill its rusty demise in january when i had to say farewell. They where rock hard but boy it was fun going sideways everywhere
Tried Blizzaks but went back to iPike Xs. Just can't beat studs.
My recommendation would be the nokian hakkapeliitta. These are by far the best snow tires I've ever used. They're also reasonably priced.
Nokian Hakkapelita’s … used to run pirelli sotto zero 3 and blizzaks … never going back. Nokians are WAY better in the winter.
Nokian Hakkapelitas. They are expensive, but once you try them you can't go back.
Just an update, I managed to find 2 sets of Nokian Haka R3 a few hours prior to my trip to Leavenworth, WA. Got out of two snow storms without a problem. These tires are bomb!
I drive the same car and drive in rain seven months of the year and snow frequently when going skiing and the Nokian Hakka R3s take all the fun out of it. The remove the drama of water over the road, and sadly, near completely remove one's ability to drift across snowy parking lots. Even in the worst weather I am limited more by cars around me than I am my own confidence when driving this combination of Swedish and Finnish (I think) brilliance.
Nokian Hakka R3s is my preference. They’re pretty sporty, so the car drive much like it does on the summer tires instead of the splashy feeling I’ve had from other snows.
You can take a bigger hit in tires alone. For instance, on my stock ContiProContacts, I average 27 mpg with 235/50r18 tires. Same size but with Nokian Z-line A/S, a tire that grips the road much better wet and dry, I'm lucky to hit 25 mpg, usually more like 22 mpg.
I have 4 on my GLI and I doubt they will last 35,000 km. I took them off and put on my winters at 25K and they don't look like they will last much longer. I don't drive my car hard at all. Last winter, with 5000 to 7000 km on them, I could barely move in a parking lot with 10 cm of snow.
