Tires Pirelli or Continental
The Conti Control Contact Sport A/S tire is one of the quieter tires out there and has excellent wet and snow weather traction. Being in Michigan, driving in the snow, this tire is better than almost all all-season tires in the snow. I highly recommend these for the Passat TDI.
Had good years on my '10 Routan. Meh. Very loud and very hard. Eventually purchased a set of Continentals -- oh my what a difference it made. I would not put anything else on the Routan. They look great and perform flawlessly. Highly recommended.
I dislike the Conti's very much, always have. I had Pirelli P7s previously and absolutely loved them and will be going that route once I'm due.
I have the Continental ExtremeContactSport DW and have been pretty happy with them for the price.
The Conti’s seem to be the best bang for the buck (as were the departed DW).
I liked the continental race king as a fast rolling trail tire, and if you were ok with something a little heavier duty, maxxis high roller 2s are a good choice for the front.
Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06. Fantastic all-around tire.
FWIW, I have a 2012 SEL (not 4-motion), still with the original Scorpion Verde tires at 43,000 miles. They still have a few miles left before they need replacement (probably this summer). As far as winter performance, here in San Diego the only issue we really have is rain, and I've never noticed any issue, even after last winter's record rainfall. YMMV.
I had the continental contipro contacts on my car for around 6 years. They were good tires, they worked on dry roads and in the snow about as effectively, their rain grip was a little questionable, but what I really hated about them was how fast they wore out.
I had Pirelli winter tires on my '11 Tiguan. They sucked right from the get go. No traction.
