Water pump Hepu or Pierburg
in the last 10+ years have been using HEPU waterpumps.
we always used Pierburg assemblies with Mahle gaskets/o-rings if needed.
Ive reinstalled another new HEPU(made in germany) pump due to mileage. I don't think anything is wrong with the old one. When I cleaned the o-ring seal contact area on the block it was corroded right where it left an imprint.
The BMW original from pierburg last way longer than 60,000 miles, more like 90,000 miles. Plus, as time went on they made them better than before. Getter a new one today will last longer than the original one.
We routinely get cars with 120,000 miles on their first water pump too.
My car had a Pierburg on it for over 100k miles and 12 years. It still worked great before I replaced it out of caution.
However the pierburg shouldn't crack as it's all aluminum. That doesn't mean it'll last any longer. My original one (n54) failed at about 60k. Replaced with factory. Then replaced that one with pierburg as I was doing oil pan gasket and figured might as well since I'm in there at about 90k. The pierburg one failed at 10k miles (electronics jammed up somehow…I’m guessing some sort of freak surge or something as it’s a pretty simple design). Anyway replaced that with pierburg again and going strong albeit it’s only been 30k miles on the new one.
New parts should be in tomorrow (Pierburg pump). I'll update again after everything is back in! As a small detail, I noticed a brown seal-looking thing stuck in the impeller of the water pump (Continental, BMW logo. Probably factory) I am thinking the pump internally failed while spinning, and the internals took the hit and self-destructed. Hence the total BSD failure code. Just a guess though.
I changed the water pump on my e92 335i N54 2008 after it left me stranded 6 months ago. Approximately 2-3 months later, the car started running out of battery intermittently. At first it was once every month, then every 2 weeks, now it is every week. I've narrowed it down to the water pump staying on when I shut the car off, even when cold. The old water pump did this exact same thing before leaving me stranded. Both the old and new pumps are the all-aluminum Pierburg. I tried running the water pump test procedure with ISTA right after the pump kept running (after shutting down the car) and ISTA couldn't communicate with the pump. However, it did let me run other procedures, so that was not the problem. After letting the car sit down for 30 mins, ISTA was able to communicate with the pump and run the procedures. I have absolutely NO codes. My car does NOT have an IBS sensor, so that is not the problem. If I open a door, unlock the car, etc., the pump stops running. I'm about to purchase a new pump because I have troubleshot everything I could think of, but I can't imagine this brand new Pierburg pump is failing so prematurely (less than 5k kms).
If the hepu water pump I put on my 3.0T is anything to go by, I don't know that I would recommend them for chains.
I put a Hepu water pump in about 20k miles ago.
