Water pump OEM FORD or Pierburg
with water pumps on e9x’s it’s Pierburg or bust.
we always used Pierburg assemblies with Mahle gaskets/o-rings if needed.
The BMW original from pierburg last way longer than 60,000 miles, more like 90,000 miles. Plus, as time went on they made them better than before. Getter a new one today will last longer than the original one.
We routinely get cars with 120,000 miles on their first water pump too.
My car had a Pierburg on it for over 100k miles and 12 years. It still worked great before I replaced it out of caution.
In the 11000 or so km i have driven the vehicle i have already had 1) Water pump replacement, 2) Front engine cover slow leak ( awaiting parts on backorder) & 2 inspections covered under warranty.
I replaced my water pump last weekend with a new pierburg pump from ecs tuning, everything went smoothly, no leaks, etc.
I changed the water pump on my e92 335i N54 2008 after it left me stranded 6 months ago. Approximately 2-3 months later, the car started running out of battery intermittently. At first it was once every month, then every 2 weeks, now it is every week. I've narrowed it down to the water pump staying on when I shut the car off, even when cold. The old water pump did this exact same thing before leaving me stranded. Both the old and new pumps are the all-aluminum Pierburg. I tried running the water pump test procedure with ISTA right after the pump kept running (after shutting down the car) and ISTA couldn't communicate with the pump. However, it did let me run other procedures, so that was not the problem. After letting the car sit down for 30 mins, ISTA was able to communicate with the pump and run the procedures. I have absolutely NO codes. My car does NOT have an IBS sensor, so that is not the problem. If I open a door, unlock the car, etc., the pump stops running. I'm about to purchase a new pump because I have troubleshot everything I could think of, but I can't imagine this brand new Pierburg pump is failing so prematurely (less than 5k kms).
Here’s my experience with the 2019 for what it’s worth:
Bought a 2019 with 5.0, xlt with 20k miles for $41k in Aug 2022.
-Water pump and vct’s replaced at 50k miles.
-New engine at 98k miles due to oil consumption (2 dealerships and 4 months later). Replaced in Aug of 2024
-102k miles the trans started acting funny, fully grenading at 112k miles. Replaced Feb of 2025
-126k miles and the transmission cooler fails midway through a 3hour trip with the pop up camper and family in tow.
The water pump was defective as well upon diagnostic. Leak in coolant as well. 2022 with 20k miles.
The part they had sent to replace for a recall leaked all of the coolant out. Luckily the tech caught it and ordered another part.
