I did notice lifter noise with the 5w-40 so decided to go with Castrol Syntec 10w-40 and it made quite a bit of difference in quieting down the lifters. I use a Mann filter. After i get the engine flushed on my VR swap using ****ty conventional oil, i'm going to run Castrol Syntec 10w-40 in it as well. Lots of people recommend 5w-40 or 0w-40 for the VR but i've found 10w-40 works well and my oil temps seldom exceed 208*.

Just today I changed the rear brake pads and rotors on my 2004 Jetta GLI 1.8t. I got some new Zimmerman rotors and EBC Red Stuff pads on now, and obviously that fixed the grinding.
I got the light this morning on the wife's JSW. So I checked out the situation. Sure enough seriously low coolant, like well below minimum fill line. Only 7000 miles. Took it to the dealership to have it topped off.
I used Amsoil 0W-30 Severe service oil in my Jetta 1.8T for the first 120k miles or so. No problems, mostly 5-7k oil changes except when I was commuting from Ct to Boston.
I had the same problem with my 99.5 VR. I now use 5-50, problem solved.
I agree with nickbeezy... Liqui moly is qualit oil... Its funny, the way i see it: it delivers better quality than expected... If you use the oil in addition to some of their additives you will notice impressive results. These results include a quieter engine, better mpg, better long term reliability, less oil burned, etc.
Well, I did mine last weekend with Liqui Moly 5W40 and I have to say that the car does sound better than with Mobil 1 5W40. It might be imagination, but that counts too, right?? LOL
Amsoil made the engine idle much smoother than any of the other oils have but every oil I've used but Mobil has been good as far as life and burn-off goes.
I had my old OE coilpack off, replaced with the new BERU unit. I had everything put back together, started her up, and she was running okay, but still far from perfect.
I went out bought the NGK plugs and installed them moments ago. Reset the codes and started the engine. Within 1 minute I had the CEL and the P0351 - P0354 codes.
