Just happened on my rs6 a few months ago. Dealership even had the part in stock because this is common enough. 2 days in the shop. Had to have the car towed. Engine temp would climb evey time I hit the gas.

I remember on my S4 the water pump had a plastic impeller that was guaranteed to fail at some point. The aftermarket made one that was metal.
2019 Audi Q8 water pump failed around 80k miles. After looking into it, I found out Audi originally used a 4-bolt water pump and pulley design on these engines. The problem with the 4-bolt setup is that it didn’t distribute load evenly. Over time this caused premature wear on the shaft and bearings, which led to leaks and pump failures much earlier than expected. Audi must have known it was an issue because they stopped producing the 4-bolt pump and redesigned it with a 6-bolt system that spreads the load better and holds up longer. This wasn’t just normal wear—it was a weak design from the start.
My Audi s5 back then had the v8, and around 43-45000 mi I had to swap mine out
I have the same exact issue on my 2021 Q8 coolant leaking in vaccum system they want over $8k for repairs just hit 51k miles
2015 Audi S3 with 93k miles. One year of ownership (about 11k miles in one year) cost me about $5.4k in repairs out of pocket; water pump replacement, coolant issues, leaking oil.
My water pump failed and dealer replaced it under warranty. They claimed it was $5080. I would never own one of these without warranty. Stupid expensive parts/dealer labor.
My car has spend at least a month at the dealership with warranty repairs. Alternator, thermostat and water-pump are main repairs. Parts need to be ordered in every time. 31K miles now. Not so convinced about the build quality of this price range car….
I was in the same boat on my 19’ s5 w 37k miles. 7600 out of pocket. The urge to resist selling feet pics that day is unimaginable. And I think you replied to a comment earlier, but they do have a recall for the base models but not our S line of vehicles for the same part/problem… my wallet may have recovered but my heart still felt betrayed. Until I go for a drive… I can forgive her for her mistakes..
My s5 water pump failed at 300 miles, car wound up lemon’d.
Since Audi clearly makes water pumps on presumably a $50 3d printer, would it make any sense at all to buy an upgraded one, metal or whatever won’t do whatever oem ones love to, and preemptively change out ?
