OEM BMW Engine radiator

Rating 4.0

2004 E46 320i manual with 116k miles. Bought it just over a year ago for £2000 probably spent around £1000 on it (radiator, air con, rocker cover gasket, oil sensor, boot switch, coil pack), not too bad for a 20 year old car I don’t think. Only thing that doesn’t work on it is the cruise control, it used to but recently stopped.

Pros: not too bad
Cons: cruise control stopped
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 116000 km

OEM BMW Water pump

Rating 4.0
 • Overheating:

A 525tds was my first car. Only ever had two problems with it. Heater fuse kept blowing- turned out the previous owners install of the head unit used eletrical tape which over time lead to a cable shorting out on the din cage. Water pump died - oem impeller was plastic. The replacement was metal

Pros: reliable, metal impeller replacement
Cons: heater fuse blowing, plastic impeller

OEM BMW Spark plug

The tools aren’t expensive. Yes I use dielectric grease but not anti sieze on the threads (only because BMW orders us not to). Easy job for most cars.

Pros: tools aren't expensive, easy job
Cons: BMW orders not to use anti-seize

OEM BMW Transfer case

Look out for the transfer case. I have a '22 45e and it's an amazing car but for a while the car would sporadically shudder at low speeds, especially when turning (like in a parking lot). Best way to replicate this is to have the car facing downward on an incline and then slowly backup. If you sense any shudder (feeling is most prominent through the steering wheel), then the transfer case needs attention.

Pros: amazing car
Cons: shudder at low speeds

OEM BMW Water pump

The water pump had a micro leak that would spray coolant on the air box. Never enough to make me want to go through the trouble of replacing it.

Cons: micro leak, coolant top-up
Vehicle: BMW Z4

 • Slow warm-up:

I bought from FCP euro one of the OE water thermostat and water pump. The thermostat sticks open since new so I get check engine light on my M54 engine.

Cons: thermostat sticks open

OEM BMW Timing chain

 • Rattle:

I do not trust these early n20 engines. I would advise spending the $3k-$4k for a “good” used engine with service records 2014 or newer. Replacing the timing chains is a big job and is not a guaranteed fix. I’ve been through this same scenario with a 328. Buy once cry once. I didn’t and I ended up removing/replacing the engine twice after doing timing chains on a high mileage engine that only lasted a couple months. Good luck!

Cons: not a guaranteed fix
