If opting for third-party filters, choose high-quality brands like WIX, Purolator, or K&N, which offer reliable alternatives that match Subaru’s specifications.

However I actually use washable K&N cabin filters. You buy once and of course it is more expensive than disposable but it pays for itself and you can easily clean whenever you want.
I've used these in a few cars and never went more than 50k miles between cleanings. You can feel the lack of power at full throttle in most vehicles when it's time, but someone told me that holding any air filter up to the sun or a bright light is a good way to tell the condition and it's been great advice.
Used to live where I'd get a ton of leaf debris etc., aftermarket filters were crap (like half an inch out of spec size), and Toyota orginals were pricey, so I went to a washable K&N and haven't looked back.
Been using it for the past 10 years on my Toyota. You must wash it only one way. Cannot have the water flow through it both ways. Also there is a k&n spray (pink/hot red) that you spray on the filter again every time you wash it. To me it's worth it
we have one. i just washed it. i use the dawn powerwash spray. first, tap against a hard object like the wall, to get out the big stuff, then spray, rinse. comes out nice and white/clean. then i hit it with my ryobi blower to push out all the excess water, and put it back. you might notice a slight increase in airflow thru the vents. i have been using the k&n cabin filters on several cars, they work well
No performance difference. These are just worth getting because they are reusable.
I drank the Kool-Aid and bought the K&N filter kit 8 years ago for my 09 6cyl. Ive put on @ 100K miles while using that filter.I cant say Ive noticed any major improvement , on the other hand I haven’t had any issues from using it either. You will have to clean, dry and then re-oil the filter when its due. Not a huge deal, but adds more time to the job .
I've used them in past vehicles - in my opinion, not worth it. No amount of cleaning will truly remove fine particles that the filter captures. I'm more comfortable using cheaper disposable filters.
First and only time i tried a k&n filter the bypass valve did not open and oil sprayed everywhere .I Will never try one again.
