I got just the upper Meyle HD control arms from FCP when I replaced my front shocks and they are good quality.
I had the same problem: this is what I had done: replaced rotors and brakepads, short time result replaced the wheelbearings and hubs, and new rotors again, shudder almost gone, only noticable on very flat roads and only on some speeds replaced all the control arms and that solved the whole problem.
Everything I have purchased from Optimal- lower front control arms, lower ball joints and tie-rod ends were stamped made in Germany on the parts themselves. Seem very high quality compared to others I was considering.
My B5 Passat was essentially the same car as a FWD A4. Had lots of trials and tribulations with that vehicle, but when I sold it with 110,000 miles, it looked and drove like new. I think I had a good example, but the only thing "major" I had go wrong was the control arm clunk, so I replaced all of those.
I've used them (control arms, ball joints, strut mounts (only on street cars), wheel bearings, etc) for years without any problems. Granted I only log about 3000 miles/year on one of the cars but it takes a fair share of abuse during those miles and I haven't yet broken a ball joint or a tie-rod end.
How can one tell with the control arms are going? It really seems ridiculous for them to wear out that often.
I think RockAuto has bad batches of these. Received a replacement that was worse than the first one and welded crooked. Same problem with subframe interference and not being able to line the back side up to thread the bolt in. Sent both back for refund. Picked up an OEM control arm from GAP and it installed without issue.
Audis are fun to drive and own, when you're not installing new control arms, valve cover gaskets, tensioner gaskets, timing belts..... Audis suck to maintain.
