I have been using Mobile 1 in my 2002 X5 3.0 and my 2001 Z3 2.5i forever. Both vehicles have about 185,000 miles each with no major repairs.
Owner reviews for engine oil
I use LiquiMoly currently, I've used Castrol, Mobile 1 and the BMW OEM. They all meet the BMW LL01 spec so not sure how much of a real difference there is.
The LiquiMoly MolyGen I'm currently using has an additive that glows under black light. Very useful in finding oil leaks.
First impressions - engine is noticeably quieter and smoother at idle. Engine temps is lower by 1 line. slightly better throttle response. As for fuel consumption, i have to drive more my usual route to know if there is an improvement.
For the UK, cheap and good: Mannol Fully Bi-Synthetic Engine Oil Longlife 3 5w30
The car runs well, no problems starting up, no significant oil burning.
Personally on my half million mile M54 E46 I use Castrol edge high mileage 5W-30 with a ok filter; mobile one or the stp extended life filter as those two typically come with the red o rings which tend to last much longer than the black ones.
I used to run 5w-30 liquimoly, i switched to 5w-40 and all my lifter and cam noise subsided after my second oild change with 5w-40. Id highly reccomend switching to 5w-40 liquimoly.
BMW has been endorsing Castrol since the early 1990's and I have to say that I've never had anything but good results using Castrol. I think it is a great oil and seems to do really well in BMWs.
Rotella T6 0W40.
I got my 2018 Sprinter and so have used the Pento HPII in that as well.
G60 Carat said: Speaking of Rotella, Here's a personal observation of mine. My beater Saturn 1.9 has a lifter tick (not fixing it, don't care), so I just put in Rotella T, and it quiets it up a bunch! But last oil change I just used the 20w50 I had on the shelf for the VW, since it's in pieces anyways. Despite the heavier oil, the lifter tick is louder with 20w50 that it was with 15w40 Diesel oil.
