Cut open the Fram XG3614 ... barely noticeable filtermagnet deposits on the inside.... definitely another quality filter:

So my car has 86k on the clock and its an Edition 30 GLI. Great car by the way. I service it every 5k with Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro Formula (502.00 spec) with a MANN filter.
The 30 is the way to go. It's better in most every way and is not that much more. They use a better filter media and seals for a longer service life.
Mann & Mahle filters aren't all that expensive and since needing them won't be a surprise type event; buying them can be scheduled prior to need.
I used a Fram XG3614 filter. Since cost is the same and there was plenty of room, I will use the next size up XG3600. Since I use this filter on other cars and the lawn tractor, I dont need to worry about different filter PNs either. Capacity bump should help any DIY'er stuck on 0w20 for 10k miles too.
Personally I run synthetic oil 7000 miles(I have had it tested at Blackstone labs and the results show it's still good at that time) before I change it and I change it and the filter(very important) at that time.
Their WIX XP line is about as good as you can get. Virtually the same as the FRAM Ultras. For normal WIX filters, I consider them to be average. They are what you should get at minimum, anything below is not worth buying. A "gold standard" in fitlers, if you will.
I'd like to add that the oil pressure appeared normal after installing the Mobile 1 filter. The Mobile 1 filter is about half an inch longer than the RE filter, and I read that different sized oil filters can cause the oil pressure to drop, but my indicator was not lit during any of my test riding.
the bypass valve on the Mobil filter is too low for our engines ~ 15 psi. Mahle/Mann is at ~27 psi. In certain situations, even normal situations, the mobil filter isn't filtering at all
Frams are cheaper. Fram filters are smaller and don't have the same internal baffle / checks and might not filter as well. It's just not as quality of a part than other manufacturers. You get what you pay for.
