Starters don’t generally “slow down” with age, really. You’ll just find that one day it quits working. I had a failed starter on a 2002 Jetta, probably at around 290-300k miles
Owner reviews for starter motor
My Passat has 370k km and is 20 years old, still on the original starter, and starts like a champ.
Bosch is also not a bad name starter to buy from something like rockauto.
Denso is the only option you should go with.
Some aftermarket starters are garbage, some are good. Denso starters are usually pretty solid if they still make them for your vehicle.
I would recommend a Honda genuine remanufactured starter. 3year/36k mile warranty and it's a genuine Honda part so it will work.
Had my starter replaced with oem starter on an 08 civic after breaking down on Christmas. Total was $800 but they claimed the starter itself was more than half the cost.
My CPO Base Impreza 2019, with 26k miles, wouldn’t start. The starter motor failed and that part is out of warranty. I was just pissed because I had the car for less than 2 years.
My 2018 started having starter issue at around 40k.
I have had intermittent issues with a cold start where it would need to crank for much longer than seemed appropriate.
