GERMAN AUTO PARTS got me a brand new Valeo starter for $200....just fyi for anyone who needs to buy a starter.
Can confirm Mk3 starters work on Mk1s as long as it's a manual Mk1, have had one on for years, have seen it done on several Mk1s.
So I picked up the MK4 unit. It sounds different than the old unit. From what I read it's got gear reduction in it. Car starts fine. Glad to have some new tech in this old car, and it's funny, the MK1 unit has a 1 year warranty while the MK4 unit is lifetime. Put another check in the pro column for the MK4 unit!
The only thing I have had to replace on the car since I bought it was a starter.
The starter is a Bosch premium re-manufactured unit and tested good before I put it in.
After testing, 14.8 v at the starter when cranking is better than the .7 volt drop before! and now there's no battery drain!
I got a starter from AutoZone (Duralast - remanufactured from Mexico) and installed it myself. Anyway, I got it free, took careful note as to where all the wires were supposed to go and then set about installing the other starter.
We got the battery tested - it's fine. Tried tapping the starter, but still no joy.
With the old starter I got a couple slow cranks. with the new starter I get nothing. I think it has something to do with this relay. Oh, and P.S. after pulling out the old starter I tested it on the bench and it won't spin, so it's definitely bad.
