I ordered a Valeo voltage regulator, which comes with new brushes, from an eBay seller for $35. I read 14.48 volts at the battery with the car running so initial indications are that the repair was a success.

Could be a bad voltage regulator. They do funky things sometimes.
Also, dump the old Delco-Remy voltage regulator and get a solid state one. Try Cycle Electric.
It’s been an amazing car. Just oil changes, filter changes, and the only part I’ve replaced is a voltage regulator for 500 bucks.
EDIT: so after fixing grounds and other wiring, the VR was still giving the same results. Switched to a solid state VR and right away everything worked normally. It would seem that the 2 "new" Delco Remy VR's I ordered both were bad or poorly made right out of the box. Everything is working normally now!
Just an FYI for you and whomever might come across this post. Bmw alternators are amazing and have removable voltage regulators. Just had a voltage drain that I diagnosed as a bad alternator on my e61. New voltage regulator for $30 and I’m back on the road, this was about 4 months ago. Saved me a lot of money when I was considering a chain store alternator, and it’s all oem equipment now. After this I learned that most of the time it’s not the alternator that goes bad, just the regulator. But almost no one makes alternators with removable regulators anymore.
Hi guys. The voltage regulator arrived today, changed it and it solves the charging issue! 14.3+v with no load and still above 13v with full load! Thanks for the input!!
Took alt off and reinstalled vReg. Reinstalled, was perfect kicking to 13-14V!.... *except* low & dropping V when idling for some minutes (9.5-11.5V). Noticed while staring @V through the climate control it hit 14.3 a couple of times. Hadn't been that high since \"repair\". Was conscious of it, thank goodness, because it proceeded to overcharge up to 17V!
So i did this today with 3amp 400 piv diode and at idle i was charging at 14 and when i revved it was pegging at 16V, is this overkill? I dont want to drive around and kill my electrical system Click to expand... YES, very much overkill. So is the guy above that was putting out 13.9 and and now 14.7. Anything over 14.1 is usless and asking for trouble. Guys, this is a great mod, in fact i'm using the adjustable in my Corrado now and have it set to 14.1. However, if your already putting out close to that voltage than this is a waste of time. If your putting out 13.1 to 13.4 then i'd say go for it. Remember though to check it with the throttle raised and make sure your safe. Anyone leaveing their alternators pumping out 16v with the throttle up a bit, i'll give it a week and your battery will start to smell of rotten eggs. Then you've got dangerous problems on your hands.
But I wouldn't touch a Huco brand. They don't have a very good reputation for quality.
