I ordered a replacement Bosch regulator F-00M-A45-303 from ebay and while it was being shipped to me decided to pull the alternator out and take a look at its general condition.
got mine last week. It's a Transpo. Installed on Saturday night and the results were great. The car runs much more smoothly. The old VR worked, was close to being worn out, but was close to 8 yrs oldput out less than 13v when running.
You probably need regulator part number 1 197 311 022, EL 14V 4C OR on eBay or Amazon Transpo part number IB354. They are $55-65 at Autozone and $14-18 online.
So, I replaced the extremely worn voltage regulator and voltage picked up to 14.2 ish. Still wanted more so I replaced the battery cables, alternator to starter cable, and main grounds. Voltage now reads around 14.35 and peaks at 14.5. Surely the alternator cannot be the problem.
i previously replaced the voltage regulator and it charges fine the commutator rings were in good condition and i cleaned and serviced the bearings the best i could soo... should i just give up and replace this with a new bosch 65 amp unit?
It's usually just the brushes. On a Bosch unit, under $25 gets you the voltage regulator with the brushes, and we're talking 2 screws and 5 minutes to swap it out...without even removing the alternator. If you want to replace the bearings, less than $20 gets you both bearings and takes about 15 minutes with the alternator off the car. Life expectancy? My 1.6 diesel alternator went dead at 1:00 a.m. about an hour north of Las Vegas. 289,000 miles at the time.
I charged the battery and started the car, then drove to Autozone where their tester said that the voltage regulator was bad. Installation took less than an hour. Once up and running everything worked well and I even took it back to Autozone and had it rechecked.
thanks this worked out great, i just did it and it couldn't have been easier. i was tired of the alt barely charging the battery. i know have 14.8 volts and with everything on its 14 instead of 13.2. no more reving the engine after start up to extinguish the light. thanks for the tip!:thumbup:
OK. First thing is the voltage regulator was faulty. It was a new voltage regulator but it wasn't a Bosch part. I switched the 2 regulators and the problem went away.
I changed the voltage regulator in the instrument cluster and the engine still loses power.. I realized that the engine loses power when it gets hot.. temperature gauge is just past the half way mark.. This means it IS the hall sender, yeah?
