Brake pads Akebono or OEM Volkswagen
Phaeton brake pads have a sensor attached that when pads have worn sufficiently thin, the sensor will wear through and provide the brake warning light to illuminate. The warning means that you need to replace the pads in the near future.
Rear brake pads replaced at 42k.
Hmm, I find my Golf TDI brakes to be excellent. Havent tracked them, but have punished them on occasion with liberal use of power on the highway, even combined with going down hill, and have never experienced fade.
aftermarket pads will do that. I had the same problem on my passat, put in OEM pads and no more rattle. it was annoying as hell every little bump or crack in the road. The reason they supply those \"anti-rattle\" clips is because the pads ARE NOT made to oem specs. Only slightly oem specs and you get the play in the pad to bracket clearance like the pad is not tight in there. Those clips take up that space. I have used pads from just about every manufacturer, bendix, ate, wagner, ebc, monroe, bosch, beck arnley, raybestos. All not made to OEM specs. The only pads I have found that are close or good enough to oem are akebono but they tend to squeel if you glaze them from hard stopping. Cheap pads gets you cheap pads.
I had 'em on my 323i and agree that the initial bit was a bit less, but the stopping power was still good and the wheels stayed very clean.
As for the brakes the S2 16v's should take it hands down.
But the MK2 brakes by far hands down feel better and seem to grab better. I'm not sure why that is, they are actually more worn than my Mk1.
Sorry to disagree, but the Akebono pads have been way quieter than stock and create practically zero dust. The rate of wear is seemingly slower than OEM too.
Pay attention to the brakes. For what it is worth ... I have a 2010 Routan SE which has been great except for the brakes. I bought the car new and the brakes it came with (rear) lasted 17,000 mi.
We tow with the van, and load it up with parts to go to shows, and the brakes are not inspring confidence!
