Engine oil Shell or PENNZOIL
Honestly, any brand should be okay as long as you change your oil every 5k miles. Personally I run Penz ultra plat. I never burn oil with it and my engine sounds quieter than it did w/ Mobil 1.
Put about 300K on two different M54's so far. Originally Mobil1/Castrol 0W30 (that was the original BMW recommendation in early 2000s), eventually switched to Pennzoil Euro 5W40 for oil leak reduction.
Shell Rotella (Rimula) 10W40, mines on 165k, 6 months ago I did the O2 Pilot mod and started to use the above oil as it's fully synthetic and made for Buses, Heavy Trucks etc, and so has extremely good cleaning abilities. My oil consumption has dropped almost 4 fold and the cams, rockers, oil filter housing have all been cleaned of the varnish type coating they had too.
The oil type is likely fine, but the viscosity isn't. Ignore what the book says, get the 5W30 out of there. The PDs love to eat cams, and running 5W30 makes the problem worse. Me personally, I run Shell Rotella T6 5W40.
dude stick to the engine oil grade mentioned in the user manual and fill shell synthetic of that grade
I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic made from natural gas. Oil consumption is 1/2qt in 5K.
I flip between Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Motul depending on if I choose to order ahead of time or just do it when I feel like.
Pennzoil Platinum Ultra is also commonly used/recommended instead of the Motul and is cheaper.
I always use Penzoil Ultra Platinum and have never had an issue.
I switched to Rotella T6 (5w-40 Full Synth) after running Penzoil, Chevron, Castrol, Mobil, regular non-high mileage 10w-30 dinos in that order over 4000 miles. Worst of this bunch was Mobil and Chevron, the HLA tick was unbearable, even right after the oil change.
