Stepdad recommended replacing ignition coils, so I purchased a 4 pack of Delphi GN 10369 from amazon. Sure enough, we just replaced the coils, and boom, it ran good as new (to me).

Pros: ran good as new, fixed misfire
Vehicle: Acura TSX
Part number: GN 10369

I have a 2017 Forte with the regular manual transmission 2L non-GDI engine. At about 19,000 miles I started getting a strange sudden drop in RPM at random times (idle or on freeway). I would mostly notice the loss in power when it dropped and it would return to normal usually in less than five seconds. Never got any codes and car ran great 99.9% of the time.

As I approached 23,000 miles it got more frequent and finally threw a P0302 (Cyl 2 Misfire). I inspected spark plugs first. To no surprise they were in great condition. I swapped cylinder 2's ignition coil to cylinder 3, cleared the codes with my scanner, and the coders all cleared. About two days later I got a P0303 (Cyl 3 Misfire).

I ordered a Delphi ignition coil (GN10877) on Rockauto to replace the suspect ignition coil. Haven't experienced the issue since. Car also idles so well now that I can't feel it in steering wheel or hear it at idle.

I had no idea how bad that ignition coil was until it was replaced and was still shocked that it started failing at 19,000 miles.

Pros: resolved misfire, smooth idle
Vehicle: Kia
Mileage: 23000 km
Part number: GN10877

I think the only difference is lifespan and reliability. I wouldn't cheap out on plug-on-coils because the budget companies don't take as much care with the wire insulation (apparently 2 different temperature ratings are acceptable, and the cheap companies use the lower temperature), coil material, or the epoxy that coats and insulates everything isn't as good or isn't applied as well.

Pros: lifespan and reliability
Cons: wire insulation quality

Every wet rain or slushy day, my 97 2.0 would quit or not start at all. Sprayed everything individually and figured it was the ignition coil cause it had hairline fractures. I replaced my ignition coil, but it still gave me troubles.

Cons: still gave me troubles

My wife's 2000 Cabrio started having this same set of symptoms. Replaced coil, plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor not that long ago. Coil was indeed cracked, but the symptoms persist.

Cons: symptoms persist

I never use aftermarket coils, nor would I. I have taken out too many bad ones. In fact, a friend put a set of some parts store coils in his daughter's Tiguan, and two weeks later one died.

Pros: factory coils reliable
Cons: aftermarket coils unreliable

VW makes bad ignition coils, period. Bad design, bad reliability, bad everything. They actually came out in pieces and were siezed into the head on some cylinders. There was several inches of calcification and junk from water going down into the holes (no engine cover for 123,000 miles). I had to blow out the plug holes with air compressor, after I vacuumed the inches of calcium dust out, then still after I removed the plugs found rust under the crush washer they seat on. It wasn't fun and I had to polish the holes up to hopefully stop that disgusting build up. It was BAAAAAD looking but it ran fine with only a single misfire up to almost 130k.

Pros: ran fine with single misfire
Cons: bad design, bad reliability, came out in pieces, seized into the head
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 209214 km
